International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations

Meeting:

79th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
20.1 Reform of the global health architecture and the UN80 Initiative
Statement:

IFPMA believes a stronger global health architecture should foster innovation, strengthen health systems so innovations reach people, and forge partnerships to advance health globally.

For a joint process to succeed, three safeguards are essential.

o First, it should clarify mandates, comparative advantages and decision pathways across institutions, including how recommendations affecting organizations beyond WHO would be considered by their governing bodies.

o Second, it should ensure balanced participation, with the private sector included alongside civil society in core structures, including the joint task force and any time-limited working groups where relevant

o Third, product innovation and access should remain within WHO’s constitutional and Member State-mandated functions, and should not drift into IP, licensing, pricing, procurement, manufacturing, or supply decisions.

IFPMA stands ready to contribute.
