78th WHA Individual Statements
We in the World Federation of Public Health Associations, the leading global organization dedicated to global public health advocacy, representing over 130 member organizations and 5 million public health professionals worldwide, agree that the health imperative to prevent nuclear war has never been more urgent. Renewing WHO reports dating to 1987 and 1993 is critically important.
Therefore, we strongly support the resolution “Effects of Nuclear War on Public Health,” congratulate sponsoring states, and urge all delegations to support it.
As 134 international health and medical journals concluded in their joint editorial released last week:
“a renewed mandate for WHO’s work in this area can provide vital authoritative and up-to-date evidence for health and public education, evidence based advocacy and policies, and the mobilised public concern needed to trigger decisive political leadership. This is a core health imperative for all of us.”
Thank you.
