International Lactation Consultant Association

Meeting:

78th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Item 24.2 Review of and update on matters considered by the Executive Board were discussed during the 156th Executive Board meeting in February 2025.
Statement:

The International Lactation Consultant Association supports the extension of global nutrition targets and the Decade of Action on Nutrition to 2030, keeping nutrition a high priority for improving health.

We specifically welcome extending the target for exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months to 60%, and adding operational targets on early initiation of breastfeeding and access to counselling and clinical care. The revised target and addition of operational targets can be used to plan service improvements and will result in improved health, save lives, reduce inequalities, and protect children’s rights to optimal health and nutrition.

ILCA also reminds member states that every dollar invested in supporting breastfeeding brings an estimated $35 in economic returns.
