78th WHA Individual Statements
Alzheimer’s Disease International thanks the Director-General for his report and the work of the WHO during health emergencies around the world.
Accordingly, we would like to highlight the particular and disproportionate impact of health, conflict and humanitarian disasters on those living with dementia.
Evidence has shown, those living with dementia, often in the later stages of the condition, have been unable to, or refused to leave sites of danger and do not comprehend the danger around them. Additionally, there is the frequently disruption to the diagnosis and treatment pathways and issues with access to support.
ADI welcomed the recent WHO report on Dementia in refugees and migrants. In this context, ADI would like to remind the WHO and Member States, when completing their essential work, to be mindful of the specific needs of those living with dementia and to better integrate local dementia association expertise into humanitarian responses.
