12.3 Communicable diseases – Road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030
The World Federation of Neurology (WFN), with 126 member neurological societies worldwide, welcomes the progress made following the road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030. Many neglected tropical diseases—including neurocysticercosis, neuroschistosomiasis, leprosy, and rabies—are major drivers of neurologic morbidity and mortality, especially in low-income regions. Beyond their physical impact, these diseases can severely affect brain health and mental health while carrying considerable stigma that isolates patients and delays care.
The World Federation of Neurology (WFN), through its training, education, and advocacy efforts, is highly supportive of this initiative and urges member states to expand access to care for tropical-disease-affected populations, as well as continue to implement multisectoral prevention measures. Doing so would help reduce preventable suffering, disability, and discrimination, and allow for optimized brain health for populations still exposed to neglected tropical diseases.
