Provisional agenda item 12.9. Draft updated global action plan on antimicrobial resistance

IADR welcomes the continued work toward adoption of the updated global action plan on antimicrobial resistance.

Oral health care is an important setting for antimicrobial stewardship. Dental prescribing should be supported by oral disease prevention, infection prevention and control, and timely access to evidence-based clinical guidance. Including oral health in national AMR action plans can help reduce inappropriate antibiotic use, strengthen prescribing surveillance, and ensure equitable access to quality-assured antimicrobials when clinically needed.

We call on Member States to:
• strengthen antimicrobial stewardship across all health professions, including oral health
• invest in surveillance, laboratory capacity, and regulatory systems and
• support research for context-specific implementation.

A One Health approach, backed by sustainable financing, is essential to protect vulnerable populations and preserve antimicrobial effectiveness.
