World Federation of Neurology
78th WHA Individual Statements
The World Federation of Neurology applauds the continued efforts towards controlling meningitis, particularly with the launch of the Global Roadmap to Defeat Meningitis by 2030.
The burden of meningitis, however, remains high, and the significant mortality and disability rates continue to disproportionately affect lower-income countries. It takes a toll on the neurological health of survivors, often resulting in long-term disabilities such as cognitive impairment, hearing loss, and seizures. The management of these sequelae creates additional burden and costs for individuals, families, communities and states. Neurology professionals play an important role in the early diagnosis of meningitis and the prevention of debilitating complications.
We urge the WHO and member states to prioritize capacity building within health systems, enhance training, and foster global collaboration, with particular attention to regions with gaps in diagnostic and treatment capacity. Together, we have the tools and knowledge to defeat meningitis.
