NCD Alliance
78th WHA Individual Statements
Each year, air pollution costs governments around US8.1 trillion and causes over 8 million deaths – nearly 90% due to noncommunicable diseases. Despite the human and economic burden, air pollution interventions have not been adopted at the scale and pace needed to meet NCD targets.
NCD Alliance welcomes the updated road map and its overall target, to build further momentum for clean air action, and ask Member States to adopt it.
When implementing the road map, we urge Member States to:
- Fully integrate air pollution action into national NCD plans;
- Prioritize interventions to reduce fossil fuels use, as the major driver of air pollution and climate change;
- Seek other co-benefits, including around active transportation and sustainable food systems;
- Reiterate WHO’s mandate to produce a menu of ‘best buys’ on air pollution
