78th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Items 12 and 13.1.
Statement:

The International Association for Suicide Prevention welcomes the inclusion of mental health in non-communicable disease (NCD) prevention and control efforts. We urge Member States to prioritise mental health and suicide prevention as integral parts of NCD strategies, supported by adequate resources and evidence-based interventions. Addressing these challenges requires multisectoral collaboration and a comprehensive, human rights-based approach that promotes dignity, reduces stigma, and includes the decriminalisation of suicide and suicidal behaviour. We further call on Member States to address the social, economic, environmental, and commercial determinants that affect both mental and physical health outcomes. Finally, we emphasise the importance of including people with lived experience in the development, implementation, and evaluation of mental health and suicide prevention policies and programmes.
