The IAHPC suggests that the WHO Global Strategy on “Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health” adopt a broader lens beyond maternal and infant mortality to reflect the full scope of suffering experienced across the life course. Palliative care—absent from the current Strategy—is essential to alleviate serious health-related suffering in neonates, children, adolescents, and their families, especially in low- and middle-income countries. High rates of pediatric morbidity, cancer, mental illness, conflict-related trauma, and bereavement demand comprehensive, compassionate responses. Young caregivers, particularly girls, also need support.
Access to palliative care, including essential medicines, must be integrated into primary care to improve dignity, reduce harm, and strengthen health systems. Member States must prioritize palliative care in policies, training, and funding to fulfill the Strategy’s title and ensure the right to health for all women, children, and adolescents.
