77th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Group 1.1. Items 11.1 and 11.2
Statement:

The International Lactation Consultant Association notes the need to address NCDs and accelerate the expansion of essential health services in UHC, especially in maternal health.

Research shows that raising global breastfeeding rates to recommended levels could prevent 98 000 deaths of mothers from diabetes and cancer each year, in addition to saving 823,000 children’s lives. Breastfeeding in infancy reduces rates of hypertension, obesity, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, and cardiovascular diseases in adulthood.

ILCA urges Member States to include skilled lactation care in primary health care services, and to invest in appropriate training of physicians, nurses, and midwives, as well as supporting the development of a skilled lactation care workforce.

Increased investment in breastfeeding protection and support will also serve to reduce NCDs.
