Statement:

Despite concerted and substantial efforts by WHO, member states, and non-state actors, Leprosy (also known as Hansen’s Disease) remains a global health challenge. In the year 2022, 174,087 new cases of leprosy were reported that includes 10,302 children. This underscores the urgent need for intensified efforts in early detection and monitoring to prevent permanent disabilities.

Strengthening healthcare systems, promoting effective diagnosis, ensuring access to treatment, fostering community engagement and eliminating stigma and discrimination faced by those affected by leprosy, are crucial to achieving the 2030 WHO NTD Roadmap targets for Leprosy. Additionally, we must prioritize research to identify better diagnostics, treatments and methods to combat emerging antimicrobial resistance.

The commitment of International Leprosy association to eliminate leprosy is unwavering. Let us unite, guided by principles of equity and inclusiveness, to achieve a world free of Leprosy.
