Agenda Item:
- Group 1.2. Items 11.3, 11.4 and 11.5
Statement:

WaterAid welcomes the first global strategy on infection prevention and control (IPC) launched in 2023 by WHO which is vital for achieving safer healthcare by 2030. The strategy prioritizes clean and safe care as a fundamental right, emphasizing equity and sustainability. To achieve IPC, WASH in healthcare facilities is essential, crucial for combating infections and reducing healthcare costs. Backed by the World Bank, WaterAid’s recent research highlights significant cost-saving opportunities from WASH in healthcare. Healthcare-associated infections consume 2.5 to 10.9% of African national health budgets, yet half are preventable through WASH investments, enhancing resilience and reallocating resources. Every health worker and patient deserves dignified care. WaterAid urges:
· Increased funding for WASH in healthcare,
· Stronger support from development finance providers to low-and middle-income countries,
· Prioritization in global policy and financing commitments by health ministers and governments worldwide
