Universal health coverage - Rare diseases: a global health priority for equity and inclusion

The World Federation of Neurology (WFN), with 126 member neurological societies worldwide, supports the inclusion of rare diseases in universal health coverage schemes. Rare neurological conditions have a very significant prevalence and create high economic burden through progressive neurologic and mental health disability, high treatment and rehabilitation costs, and caretaker involvement.

Incorporating neurological rare diseases in UHC frameworks will allow for earlier intervention, longer active lifespans for patients, preserve dignity, and reduce family and societal burdens.

The WFN urges member states to strive towards equitable access to genetic testing, novel therapies, and multidisciplinary management and rehabilitation for patients with rare diseases. As a society of neurology professionals, we believe “Access for all” is a prerequisite of humane and sustainable healthcare systems.
