World Federation of Neurology
156th EB Individual Statements
Honorable Chair, distinguished members of the Executive Board, esteemed colleagues,
On behalf of the World Federation of Neurology, I would like to address one of the most devastating yet preventable diseases. Meningitis continues to claim over 250,000 lives annually. It takes a toll on the neurological health of survivors, often resulting in long-term disabilities such as cognitive impairment, hearing loss, and seizures.
We applaud the efforts of the WHO and other stakeholders in recognizing meningitis as a key priority, especially the launch of the Global Roadmap to Defeat Meningitis by 2030. However, we must continue to promote universal access to vaccines, ensure the availability of rapid diagnostics, and strengthen health systems to deliver effective care.
Neurologists play a pivotal role in the prevention and management of meningitis. We urge the WHO to prioritize initiatives that build capacity within health systems, enhance training, and foster global collaboration. Together, we have the tools and knowledge to defeat meningitis.
Thank you.
