Wellcome Trust
79th WHA Individual Statements
Honourable Chair, Esteemed Delegates,
Wellcome considers the joint process to support reforms of the global health architecture to be timely and crucial, but that there needs to be a significant increase in ambition.
It is critical this process delivers much-needed substantive reforms that redistribute power and embed new ways of working.
It must consider opportunities to streamline the landscape through merging and consolidation of organizations. As currently proposed, the process seems to lack this mandate.
The process must also be genuinely inclusive. It should foster ownership and active engagement among member states from all regions, and ensure civil society is included as member of the task force.
Finally, the process must ensure dialogue leads to concrete, actionable proposals. Without these, the opportunity to build a better system will be missed.
Thank you, Chair.
