77th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Group 1.3. Items 11.6, 11.7, and 11.8
Statement:

We welcome this resolution on antimicrobial resistance and the ambition for Member States to accelerate their action on AMR including through the WHO framework.

2024 is a pivotal year in the AMR response. Despite significant progress in the past decade, the world is still not going far enough or fast enough in its efforts to tackle AMR. We must not waste the opportunity of the political moments this year to shift gear, towards more coordinated, sustained action.

We encourage WHO and member states to engage in negotiations around overarching targets for AMR that galvanise action and build on the global priorities outlined in the resolution. We also ask WHO and member states to support calls for an evidence panel on AMR per the 2019 UN Secretary General report. This should be underpinned by a mechanism for regular convening beyond the HLM to assess and drive progress, pull through evidence from a potential Panel into action, and more broadly enable countries to continue to align on global priorities. Without structured actions like these, the global burden will continue to remain far too high.
