WHO research estimates effective infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship can reduce the burden of AMR by 85%.
AMR cannot therefore be contained if we don’t mobilise the political will and financing required to achieve the target of 100% of countries having basic water, sanitation and hygiene services in all healthcare facilities – as agreed to by member states at the High-Level Meeting (HLM) on AMR in September 2024.
It is vital the updated Global Action Plan recognise the significance of the contribution to be made by IPC and WASH in healthcare facilities and that the Quadripartite Organisations construct the new Independent Panel for Evidence for Action against Antimicrobial Resistance, mandated by the HLM, in a way that promises to recognise and drive forward in a proportionate manner all the potential solutions to AMR.
