For more than 200 years, USP, an independent, scientific nonprofit organization, has protected public health by developing quality standards for medicines and dietary supplements.
TCIMs play a significant role in healthcare systems worldwide. However, there is little global consensus on their scope, requirements, definitions, or terminology. As TCIM ingredients increasingly move through complex international supply chains, the need for transparent, science-based quality standards has never been greater.
USP supports the draft WHO strategy on traditional medicines, particularly Strategic Objective #3, which aims to ensure the quality and safety of TCIM through regulatory mechanisms.
We encourage WHO to explore ways to expand the engagement of NSAs—particularly within the International Regulatory Cooperation for Herbal Medicines —to further strengthen global collaboration and regulatory alignment.
