78th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Item 18.2 Updated Road map for an enhanced global response to the adverse health effects of air pollution
Statement:

UICC welcomes the development of the updated roadmap as IARC has classified outdoor air pollution as a group I carcinogen since 2013, and a Lancet Commission estimates that up to 29% of lung cancer deaths, the most common cancer globally, are attributable to air pollution. We applaud the proposed target to reduce mortality from anthropogenic air pollution by 50% by 2040.

We therefore urge Member States to:
• Adopt the roadmap and integrate the roadmap target into relevant national strategies, drawing of Guidance from the WHO Compendium
• Recognise people with cancer and other NCDs as a vulnerable group in relevant national policies and programmes.
• Include practical air quality commitments in the upcoming Political Declaration on NCDs, focusing on maximising the co-benefits of clean air action for people living with NCDs.
