78th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Items 16.1, 16.3, 16.4, 17.1 and 17.4
Statement:

Thank you, chair,

We welcome DG’s report on this crucial agenda item of strengthening global architecture for health emergencies and agree that now more than ever Member States need to build resilient health systems that can withstand future emergencies.

Robust health systems are built through public funding and a protected health and care workforce, with guarantee decent work, and protected from attacks in conflict zones.

As we have witnessed through the COVID-19 pandemic, private companies do not contribute to the strengthening of health systems. We are concerned that the WHO’s framework on health emergencies continues to support the role of private healthcare providers and put people over profit.

Finally, we support strengthening production capacities on health technologies of countries in the global south, and work towards an equitable and accountable Pathogen Access and Benefit Sharing System to enhance access to predictable finance and health products for health emergencies.
