78th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Items 12 and 13.1.
Statement:

NCDs cannot be addressed in isolation from social, economic and commercial determinants of health. Neoliberal economic policies, particularly with the increasing power of big corporations, have significantly, both directly and indirectly, contributed to the rise of NCDs in developed and developing countries. Impoverishing policies adopted by MS, in the name of trade liberalisation and attracting foreign investment, need to be examined in light of their impact on population health. We urge Member States to adopt institutional mechanisms that undertake such evaluations. We call for stronger regulation of private sector practices, particularly those of transnational corporations, to protect population health. This includes controls over production, marketing and advertising of their products, particularly food, confectionary, and tobacco related products.
