78th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Item 15. Antimicrobial resistance
Statement:

The Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) welcomes global progress in elevating AMR on the political agenda and applauds the adoption of the Political Declaration.

At the same time we urge governments to address AMR within broader health systems and population contexts.

First, we call the Member States to prioritize special vulnerability of women to AMR, with documented 27% higher prescription of antibiotics compared to men.

Second, women constitute approximately 67% of front-line healthcare workers and are under a greater risk of exposure to AMR due to their occupation, especially in LMICs.

Finally, AMR-related deaths are only part of the 13 million Sepsis-related deaths, and Sepsis is the human face of the antimicrobial resistance challenge.

Therefore, we must urgently prioritize women and female healthcare workers in AMR policies, and align AMR and sepsis strategies to save lives.
