78th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Item 15. Antimicrobial resistance
Statement:

Pharmacists play a pivotal role in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through antimicrobial stewardship (AMS). Pharmacists ensure that antimicrobials are used according to evidence-based guidelines and raise public awareness about their appropriate use. In collaboration with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, pharmacists support surveillance and monitoring of appropriate antimicrobial use and emergence of resistance.

We urge healthcare systems and regulators to include pharmacists in leadership roles in order to mitigate AMR via effective AMS based on their training, knowledge, skills and expertise. Facilitating the leadership of pharmacy in AMS is essential to preserving the effectiveness of antimicrobials and safeguarding these medications.

FIP has developed AMR regional roadmaps on existing and planned activities for AMR and AMS, taking into account diverse regional contexts. FIP remains committed to alleviating AMR and advancing AMS globally, regionally and locally by increasing multisectoral collaboration, research, leadership and advocacy.
