77th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Group 1.3. Items 11.6, 11.7, and 11.8
Statement:

Both antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) are global priorities for all nations. FIP supports all Member States to leverage pharmacists’ crucial role in mitigating AMR and advancing AMS and, in line with our commitment to Universal Health Coverage, when they think health to think pharmacy.

The proposed restriction on non-prescription antimicrobials mentioned on page 8 of the report ‘Antimicrobial resistance: accelerating national and global responses’ may delay treatment and disadvantage underserved communities. Pharmacists can promote responsible and rational antimicrobial use through health literacy campaigns, ensuring non-prescription antimicrobials are appropriate and offering alternatives or referrals as needed.

Pharmacists are great leaders and supporters of many AMR prevention initiatives. While ensuring the quality, efficacy and safety of antimicrobials throughout their lifecycle, pharmacists also educate patients and support healthcare providers, as well as promote infection prevention and control practices and vaccination.

Giving the importance of the One Health approach, FIP has a policy statement on mitigating AMR through AMS for governments, policymakers, and pharmacists and their organisations. It describes necessary actions and FIP’s commitment to AMR.
