Agenda Item:
16. WHO's work in health emergencies
Statement:

The International Lactation Consultant Association highlights the DG’s report showing continued health emergencies that worsen water and food insecurity, especially for women and children.

Breastfeeding is life-saving in emergency situations.

Recent research from Ukraine shows that breastfeeding support is reducing child morbidity and mortality during war.

Unsolicited donations of infant formula undermine breastfeeding practices, and create food insecurity for the most vulnerable.

We urge member states to refocus on their commitment in resolutions in 2010 and 2018 to incorporate the Operational Guidance on Infant Feeding in Emergencies into national emergency preparedness and response plans.

This will protect and increase breastfeeding during emergencies, contributing to infant food security and protection against infections, which are critical, life-saving outcomes.
