International Lactation Consultant Association
78th WHA Individual Statements
The digital marketing of breastmilk substitutes and associated products has grown exponentially - it is pervasive, and parents are constantly receiving targeted messaging at vulnerable times. This persistent and often misleading marketing of infant formula, bottles and teats negatively affects breastfeeding rates and health outcomes.
The International Lactation Consultant Association strongly endorses the resolution on regulating digital marketing, which closes a gap and will strengthen the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes. The Code aims to protect maternal, infant and young child nutrition from commercial influence, and we urge all Member States to fully implement the Code, which includes ensuring strong monitoring and enforcement mechanisms.
Implementing this resolution will contribute to achieving far-reaching cost savings in health care, and long-term improved public health, contributing to progress on the SDGs.
