77th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Item 15.4 Climate change, pollution and health
Statement:

Honourable Chairperson and Distinguished Delegates,

Globally, fossil fuel combustion contributes to 7 million premature deaths due to air pollution every year. Most youth are not in positions to implement policies, yet we and future generations will disproportionately bear today’s climate inaction. To achieve climate justice, we need an equitable fossil fuel-free future—fossil fuels have no place in our economy, climate negotiations, or global policymaking.

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations welcomes the new resolution on Climate Change and Health and calls on Member States and the WHO to:
implement bold and effective integrated climate and health policies, including a prompt and fair fossil fuel phase-out;
dedicate adequate funding and resources to address health inequities from climate change and enforce stringent regulations to mitigate climate-related health risks.
Structurally engage youth and civil society in decision-making, implementation and evaluation of national climate and health adaptation plans and the Global Plan of Action.

Thank you.
