- Group 2: NCDs & Mental Health
Statement:

Momentum is not accelerating fast enough to meet the 2030 targets. In 2021, an estimated 727,000 people died by suicide. It’s the third leading cause of death among young people.

The Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan commits us to reducing the rate of suicide by one-third by 2030. We are not on track.

We urge Member States to deliver this target through fully resourced National Suicide Prevention Strategies, integration of mental health and suicide indicators into national health information systems, and sustained multisectoral collaboration. To decriminalise suicide and suicidal behaviour where it remains punishable by law, address the social, economic, environmental and commercial determinants of mental health, and meaningfully include people with lived experience at every stage of policy design, implementation and evaluation.
