The IAHPC commends WHO’s definition of health as complete physical, mental, and social well-being. The global compassionate communities movement strengthens mental and physical health by addressing the unmet needs of people who are isolated, chronically ill, or living with palliative care needs. Rooted in local collaboration, it fosters care ecosystems through schools, neighbourhoods, and faith communities , offering sustainable support for individuals and caregivers.
The WHO-recognized Neighbourhood Network in Palliative Care (NNPC) exemplifies best practices in community-led, cost-effective palliative care that addresses health system gaps such as pain and symptom relief, overburdened workforces, and catastrophic out-of-pocket spending. We urge Member States to support compassionate communities, embed them in long-term care strategies, and invest in palliative care training. The IAHPC stands ready to support this vital work.
