77th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Item 15.4 Climate change, pollution and health
Statement:

I am a palliative care practitioner from a climate vulnerable small Island Developing State.

Many of the half a million climate- related deaths projected by 2050 will be accompanied by serious health related suffering that can be alleviated with palliative care.

Climate driven migration and health crises displace people to refugee centers where palliative care and essential medicines may be inadequate or entirely unavailable.

Member states must integrate palliative care into primary health care per their Astana commitments, to mitigate the projected suffering of climate displaced refugees everywhere.

Compulsory palliative care education for health workers should include disaster preparedness training and attention to the psycho-social- and spiritual needs of patients and families. Disaster preparedness planning at all levels of governance should include palliative care workers.
