ESMO Statement for the 77th World Health Assembly

Agenda item 13.3 Working Group on Amendments to the International Health Regulations (2005)

Honorable Chair, Esteemed Delegates,

The European Society for Medical Oncology, representing over 35 000 cancer professionals from 172 countries, urges Member States to integrate disaster risk management into both secondary and tertiary healthcare so as to not leave millions of patients with cancer behind during health emergencies. People with life-threatening and chronic disease, such as cancer – who are predominately treated at these levels, must have continued access to life-saving services during and beyond emergencies.

Including oncology services in disaster and emergency preparedness ensures that healthcare systems are better equipped to manage both the direct impact of the crises and the ongoing needs of patients and healthcare professionals. This reduces the consequences of emergencies and disasters and enhances health security, universal health coverage, and the resilience of countries’ health systems.

Thank you.
