The Carter Center, Inc
78th WHA Individual Statements
Honorable Chair and Member States,
Disease eradication and elimination are among humanity’s greatest achievements, transforming lives and fostering equity. Since 1986, The Carter Center has been at the forefront of the international campaign to eradicate Guinea worm disease in collaboration with ministries of health, local communities, the WHO and dedicated partners and donors. The effort has empowered communities and created community-based structures that bridge persistent healthcare gaps. Without a vaccine or therapeutic, member states have reduced cases from 3.5 million annually in 1986 to only 15 last year.
Despite challenges, the end is in reach. The Carter Center, therefore, encourages Member States to adopt the Resolution to help accelerate the eradication of Guinea worm disease.
Health as a basic human right requires our continued investment. Let us honor the frontline health workers by supporting them to finish the job.
Thank you, madam chair.
