77th WHA Individual Statements

Agenda Item:
- Item 17 Draft fourteenth general programme of work, 2025–2028
Statement:

Alzheimer’s Disease International strongly welcomes the inclusion of dementia related issues within 14th global programme of work.

Dementia is currently the 7th leading cause of death globally, affecting 55 million people worldwide, a figure set to increase to 139 million by 2050. The condition also costs the global economy $1.3 trillion USD, a figure set to increase to 2.8 trillion USD by 2030.

There is just one year remaining until the completion of the WHO Global Action Plan on the Public Health Response to dementia in 2025 and Member states are far from achieving the targets. It is for this reason that Alzheimer’s Disease International, strongly encourages Member States to agree to a 10-year extension to the Global Action Plan, as first step in ensuring that dementia remains a global health priority in the 14th programme of work in 2025 and beyond.
