Description
The general objective of the plan is to reduce the suicide rate by 10% by 2020. To be able to reachthis objective the following four assumptions are made:
1. Suicide reduction is a government priority;
2. Suicide prevention is a multi- and inter-sectoral issue.
3. The national plan is in line with the National Mental Health Plan (2015-2020) and
regional and international targets and agreements which Suriname has ratified
4. The implementation of the national plan takes into account the diversity of Surinamese
society.
The five priority areas on which the plan will focus in the coming five years are
1. Increase access to mental health care for people who are suicidal and for the survivors
of people who have committed suicide
2. Restrict access to potentially lethal means and agents that increase the risk of
committing suicide
4. Improve the perception about and attitude towards suicidality
5. Increase the socio- economic and cultural empowerment of vulnerable groups
5. Strengthen the (coordination of) research
For these priority areas results and general activities have been formulated. Together with the
relevant actors they will be worked out in detail to be implemented.
