Die dritte Abteilung des schweizerischen Zivilgesetzbuches (ZGB) regelt den Erwachsenenschutz. Der dritte Abschnitt dieser Abteilung beschäftigt sich mit der fürsorglichen Unterbringung. Gemäss Art. 426 Abs. 1 ZGB darf eine Person, die an einer psychischen Störung, an einer geistigen Behinderung oder unter schwerer Verwahrlosung leidet, gegen ihren Willen in einer geeigneten Einrichtung untergebracht werden, sofern die nötige Behandlung oder Betreuung nicht anders sichergestellt werden kann.
