Description

The current Constitution of Guyana, the supreme law of the Republic of Guyana, officially came into effect on October 6, 1980. It repealed the Guyana's first constitution, which was enacted in 1966, upon its independence from the United Kingdom.
The Constitution of Guyana contains a preamble, an oath and twelve chapters. Since its 1980 enactment, it has gone through 12 amendments, most recently in 1996. Under the current Constitution, the power of the Government is distributed among five 'Supreme Organs of Democratic Power': the executive president, the cabinet, the National Assembly, the National Congress of Local Democratic Organs, and the Supreme Congress of the People, a special deliberative body consisting of the National Assembly in joint session with the National Congress of Local Democratic Organs.
The legal system of Guyana is based on English common law with certain Roman-Dutch civil law influence.

The Constitution does not contain provisions concerning the protection of intellectual property rights; however, Article 142 of the Constitution provides for protection from deprivation of property or right over property.
