Beyond the Smoke: Strengthening Waterpipe Tobacco Control

Background/Introduction:

The Knowledge Hub on Waterpipe Tobacco Control has been at the forefront of research, policy advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives to combat the growing public health threat posed by waterpipe tobacco use. This webinar, titled Beyond the Smoke: Strengthening Waterpipe Tobacco Control, brings together experts, policymakers, and public health advocates to address this critical issue. The session will explore evidence-based strategies and regional case studies, fostering collaboration to advance tobacco control efforts.

Webinar Objectives:

1. Understand the Landscape:

Provide an overview of waterpipe tobacco use and health risks, global and regional prevalence, and cultural significances.

2. Explore Regulatory Efforts:

Discuss current policies and regulations addressing waterpipe tobacco, providing examples and good practices from Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Review enforcement mechanisms for existing regulations, and successes and challenges in implementation of regulatory policies.

3. Examine Public Health Strategies:

Showcase public health campaigns, community initiatives, and educational programs targeting waterpipe tobacco use, with examples from Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Identify gaps in current strategies and areas for improvement.

4. Learn from Challenges:

Address barriers to effective waterpipe tobacco control, such as cultural acceptance, social norms, and economic factors. Analyze lessons learned from past and ongoing efforts.

5. Promote Regional Collaboration:

Discuss opportunities for Egypt and Saudi Arabia to serve as a model for countries facing similar challenges with waterpipe tobacco use and control. Highlight the importance of international and regional partnerships in strengthening waterpipe tobacco control.

6. Encourage Actionable Outcomes:

Foster discussions on innovative approaches for more effective regulation of waterpipe tobacco as part of a comprehensive tobacco control legislation. Motivate stakeholders to adopt evidence-based strategies and advocate for stronger regulatory measures.
