Context:
Angola is experiencing a large-scale cholera outbreak, with 11,307 cases and 421 deaths reported by Ministry of Health as of 08 April 2025. The outbreak has spread to different provinces, including Benguela, Luanda, Cuanza, Norte, Bengo, Icolo e Bengo, Namibe and Malanje, with new cases reported daily. Notably, one-third of deaths occurring in the community and the highest burden among those under 20 years old (more information here).
Currently, the Ministry of Health, with WHO and partners, is responding through case detection, rapid response teams, vaccination, and community engagement. With the ongoing rainy season and high population mobility, WHO assesses the risk of further spread as very high.
Request for Assistance:
The Ministry of Health of Angola has issued a request for assistance for the deployment of EMTs to support the response to the cholera outbreak in the affected regions. The request is extended to all EMTs, especially those with experience in cholera case management, and addressing the following priority needs:
- Establishment and management of Cholera Treatment Centres (CTCs)
- Early detection, screening, and provision of appropriate care
- Strengthening infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in health facilities
- Capacity building of national health professionals
Expression of Interest:
Interested EMTs are requested to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via the EMT EOI form.
Requirements:
- Teams must adhere to EMT minimum standards
- EMTs must be self-sufficient and bring their own medical supplies and medicines
