Letter to the editor: Measles on the cruise ship: links with virus spreading into an emergency department in Southern Italy

An outbreak of measles that occurred on a ship cruising the western Mediterranean Sea,
involving 27 cases among crew members and passengers between February 20 and  March the 1rst 2014,
was described to the editor. In the context of these circumstances and the possibility to further spread
of measles, the aime of this letter was to discuss the serious consequences that such an event could have
in areas where pools of susceptible persons still exist. The specific characteristics of this outbreak can
provide additional input to the measles elimination plan and it highlights the need to consider the risk of
measles transmission in EDs.
