WHO Training on Ship Sanitation and Issuance of Ship Sanitation Certificates was conducted for African, Europe and Americas Portuguese speaking countries, from 11 to 15 March and for Spanish speaking countries, 18 to 24 March, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2013

The objective of these events was to train national port health experts on ship inspection and issuance of ship sanitation certificates, under the International Health Regulations framework, using a WHO Learning Programme. These events were conducted jointly with WHO Regional Offices and WHO Country Offices.

European Union Joint Action SHIPSAN ACT

The SHIPSAN ACT is a Joint Action of 23 European Union countries co-funded by European Commission. It started in February 2013 and will have a 39-month duration. It deals with the impact on maritime transport of health threats due to biological, chemical and radiological agents, including communicable diseases and supports the implementation of International Health Regulations 2005 in EU. WHO participates in the Advisory Board of the SHIPSAN ACT Joint Action.

Novel coronavirus infection in the United Kingdom

As of 28 September 2012, no additional confirmed cases due to infection with the novel coronavirus have been reported to WHO.

On 22 September 2012, the United Kingdom (UK) informed WHO of a case of acute respiratory syndrome with renal failure with travel history to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. WHO does not recommend any travel restrictions so far.

ECDC publishes guidelines for the surveillance of invasive mosquitoes in Europe

ECDC publishes its guidelines for surveillance of invasive mosquito species in Europe. The guidelines aim to assist the countries in implementing tailored vector surveillance of invasive mosquitoes. They should also help to improve surveillance coverage and harmonize data collection at EU level, so that data from different countries and areas can be compared.
