The Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance
I am Dr. Stephen Connor from the Worldwide Hospice Palliative Care Alliance. The WHPCA welcomes the documentation on World Health Days. The WHPCA facilitates and funds World Hospice and Palliative Care Day every year and activities are funded and organised at a local and national level by civil society partners and member states. Activities take place in up to 70 countries worldwide. As a critical component of UHC, it is crucial that this opportunity is maximised to ensure the issues around access to palliative care are heard and to build dialogue between different stakeholders. Member states have approached WHPCA and our national and regional partners to state that the impact of the day would be improved if the Day was an official recognised World Health Day of the World Health Organisation. In addition, we would request that the World Health Organisation ensure that messaging around palliative care is incorporated into its work on World Universal Health Coverage Day and is considered as an upcoming theme for World Health Day. 61.5 million people experience serious health related suffering worldwide and yet the issue rarely comes up in dialogue. Official recognition of World Hospice and Palliative Care Day by the World Health Organisation would be supportive of the investment of ourselves, our partners and member states to increase the conversation around, and commitment to, this neglected issue.
