Agenda Item:
11.6 Health, environment and climate change

The World Heart Federation (WHF) commends the draft global strategies and the leadership role that the WHO intends to play, ensuring that the “voice of health” is placed at the heart of all discussions. However, we note with grave concern that the language on “undue influence and vested interests going against public interests” has been removed in the current text.

Nineteen percent of all cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths are caused by air pollution - the equivalent of more than 3 million deaths every year. Whilst you may not remember this figure by heart, you may remember that air pollution is as big a risk factor for CVDs and stroke as tobacco use.

We call on Ministries of Health to engage productively with the WHO as well as Ministries of Environment, Transportation, and Finance to implement this strategy.

In turn, we pledge to do more to support you by promoting further research on heart health and air quality create compelling evidence to bring to your colleagues.

We reach up to 2 billion people on World Heart Day, and we will continue raising awareness on this issue. We must work together to ensure that our children can grow up in healthier cities, breathing clean air. Time is running out.
