About sharing feature layers as a reference

As an administrator, you can choose how feature layers and hosted feature layer views are shared to a collaboration. Sharing your layers and views as references provides recipients in the collaboration workspace live access to the referenced items, and recipients will be able to access the feature layer's informational products, such as web maps and web mapping applications.

When you share a feature layer or view as a reference, a new layer is created in the receiving portal that refers to the original layer or view, rather than copying the original item's data. Edits made to the original layer are immediately available to each participating portal. To view a received feature layer as a reference, participants must have access to te feature layer in the originating portal. For secured layers, recipients will need to be able to authenticate in the originating portal as a member to whom the layer has been shared.

To share your layers and views as references, choose the As References option while joining a group to a collaboration workspace. All layers and views will be shared to this group will be shared as a reference, even if the original items are sync-enabled.
