World No Tobacco Day award to Finland
Every year, WHO recognizes individuals or organizations in each of the six WHO Regions for their accomplishments in the area of tobacco control. This recognition takes the form of WHO Director-General Special Recognition Award and World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) Awards.
The WHO FCTC Secretariat’s Knowledge Hub on Surveillance warmly congratulates all the award winners.
This year, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, Finland, is also among the award winners.
The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL), the hosting organization of the WHO FCTC Secretariat’s Knowledge Hub on Surveillance, operates under the auspices of the Finnish Ministry of Social Affairs and Health.
The Award was granted on the basis of the Ministry’s long-term commitment to work on tobacco control and its exemplary actions to protect particularly young people from tobacco.
WHO is pleased with Finland’s exemplary actions, which have helped to reduce the appeal of e-cigarettes among young people in particular. Finland has strictly regulated the use of e-cigarettes and prohibited characterising flavours in liquids for e-cigarettes.
On May 28th, the manager of the WHO FCTC Secretariat’s Knowledge Hub on Surveillance, Ms. Hanna Ollila, presented the Finnish tobacco control monitoring system and the trends in tobacco and e-cigarette use among adults and youth in a WNTD conference organized by Slovenian National Public Health Institute, with support of Slovenian Ministry of Health, WHO Country Office in Slovenia and WHO Regional Office for Europe.
