The Seventy-Ninth Session of the World Health Assembly will take place in Geneva, Switzerland from 18 to 23 May 2026. The World Health Organization (WHO) at a global level is mandated by the World Health Assembly Resolution 74.6 (WHA74.6) of May 2021 to support Member States in strengthening and scaling up local production to improve access. Building on the global foundation, at a regional level, the Seventy fourth session of WHO African Region (WHO AFR) Regional Committee (RC74) adopted the Framework for strengthening local production of medicines, vaccines, and other health technologies in WHO African Region, 2025 - 2035 while the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMRO), has prioritized local production in its initiatives on improving access to medical products.

Recognizing the opportunities with digitalization of local production to improve access, the Global Initiative on Digital Health and the Team Europe Initiative on the AU-EU Health Partnership will during WHA79 therefore host an informal side-event to launch a Situation Analysis and further explore how digitalization can be used to strengthen local production, quality assurance, regulation, supply chains, and foster public–private cooperation in Africa.
