Happy World Cities Day!

Every year on 31 October, the world comes together to celebrate World Cities Day and recognise the crucial role cities and communities play to shape our health and well-being.

There’s no better example of this than the members of the WHO Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities. Every single day, all 1542 of us across 51 countries are showing how cities and communities can be better places to grow, live, work, play, and age – for everyone.

Your work and contributions are a daily reminder of how much positive impact we can create for all members of a community by committing to become more age-friendly. But on this special day, we want to send you a note just to say: thank you and congratulations for being a part of the global age-friendly movement!

And don’t worry – if you’re on the journey to become a part of the Global Network, you’re part of this celebration too. We can’t wait to work with you to transform the world to be a better place to grow older this UN Decade of Healthy Ageing!

P.S. WHO has recently released two new resources relevant for all cities and communities on their age-friendly journeys. Learn more about them below – and why not celebrate World Cities Day by submitting an Age-friendly Practice about their topics?

Connecting Generations: A new 'how-to' guide on intergenerational practice

Connecting Generations is the Global Campaign to Combat Ageism's first ‘how-to’ guide, which is all about how to plan and implement intergenerational interventions. And creating #AWorld4AllAges is essential to transforming the world to be a better place to grow older!

Intergenerational practice is key to create and sustain age-friendly environments. They can contribute to building more cohesive, inclusive communities, building on the resources that younger and older people can offer each other and those around them.

Download the new guide and make use of Connecting Generations to combat ageism by developing effective intergenerational interventions in your communities.

Promoting physical activity for older people: a new toolkit for action

Environments can only be age-friendly if they enable and promote physical activity across all ages. The new WHO ACTIVE toolkit “Promoting physical activity for older people: a toolkit for action” is one of a series to help countries develop and implement policy actions to effectively increase the proportion of people participating in physical activity.

Use the new toolkit to support your work to ensure that physical activity is accessible and enjoyable for all members of your community – regardless of their age or abilities!
