Neal, Ph.D., is Professor Emerita of Urban Studies and Director Emerita in the College of Urban and Public Affairs at Portland State University. Dr. Neal directed the university\u2019s Institute on Aging from 2003 to 2018 and taught graduate courses in gerontology, survey design and data collection, and global aging. For 13 years she also directed a service-learning program involving coursework and then travel with students to Nicaragua to work with and on behalf of older Nicaraguans. In 2006, Portland was invited to be one of 33 cities from around the world to participate in the World Health Organization\u2019s Global Age-Friendly Cities project, and Dr. Neal led Portland\u2019s participation. Since that time, she has co-coordinated the ongoing Age-Friendly Portland and Multnomah County initiatives. Dr. Neal\u2019s research interests include age-friendly and dementia-friendly communities, transportation and neighborhood design for healthy aging, older workers, global aging, program evaluation, and work and family care issues. She has authored numerous publications related to age-friendly communities and three books and several journal articles and book chapters concerning how employees manage their paid employment while providing informal care to elders and workplace support options for working caregivers. Dr. Neal is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and of the Academy for Gerontology and Geriatrics in Higher Education, and she is the past president of the Oregon Gerontological Association.
