The 4th Porto Age-Friendly City Conference<\/em> brought together, this Wednesday, experts, researchers, managers, professionals and citizens to \u201cturn longevity into an opportunity\u201d. The event, held at the Super Bock Arena \u2013 Pavilh\u00e3o Rosa Mota, invited everyone to \u201csee age not as a barrier, but as a dimension of citizenship\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cAgeing well is a right, and ensuring that right is a mission for all of us,\u201d stressed the Councillor for Social Cohesion, at the opening of the municipal initiative which, according to Fernando Paulo, \u201caffirms the Municipality of Porto\u2019s commitment to building a more inclusive, supportive city, prepared for all ages.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recalling what he called a \u201cremarkable civilisational achievement \u2013 reflecting social progress, scientific advances and better quality of life\u201d \u2013 the increase in life expectancy in Portugal \u2013 the Councillor considers population ageing \u201cnot a problem to be solved, but an achievement to be valued\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe real challenge,\u201d he argued, \u201cis to ensure that everyone can age with dignity, autonomy and participation.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Fernando Paulo, this was a day \u201cto look to the future: to what still needs to be done, improved and innovated.\u201d Beyond \u201ca more accessible Porto, with safe mobility, adequate housing, welcoming public spaces and services that respond to people\u2019s real needs,\u201d the future, he added, \u201cmust be a city where age is not a barrier, but a dimension of citizenship.\u201d<\/p>\n
