Global Adult Tobacco Survey
This is the first GATS conducted by India.
The Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) is the global standard to systematically monitor adult tobacco use and track key tobacco control indicators. GATS is a nationally representative household survey of adults 15 years of age or older, using a standard protocol. It is intended to generate comparable data within and across countries. GATS enhances countries' capacity to design, implement and evaluate tobacco control interventions.

A multistage stratified cluster sample design was used. One individual was randomly selected from each participating household to complete the survey.
The estimates were based on 69,296 completed interviews of males and females in India with an overall response rate of 91.8%.

The user undertakes:
(1) to acknowledge the data source.
(2) to share any planned publications with WHO prior to publication.
(3) to offer co-authorship of any reports or publications using the survey results to the coordinator of the survey.
(4) to use the data for non-commercial, not-for-profit public health purposes only.
Publications based on GATS data should use the following acknowledgement:
"This paper uses data from the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS). GATS is supported by the World Health Organization and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."
The data is being distributed without warranty of any kind. The responsibility for the use of the data lies with the user. In no event shall the World Health Organization be liable for damages arising from its use.
